The plastic-free coffee setup
A growing share of the coffee world wants hot water touching only steel, glass, ceramic, or paper. We track prices, not toxicology, so this guide makes no health claims — it simply answers the practical question: if plastic-free is your preference, what do you buy, and is today a good day to buy it? Our bar for the tag: no plastic anywhere in the brew path. Housings and handles don’t count against it.
Brewers
Drip and manual brewing is where going plastic-free is easiest — glass, steel, and paper have been the classic materials all along.

Machines
Espresso is the hard case: almost every pump machine routes water through plastic somewhere. The honest plastic-free answer is a manual lever.

Grinders
A grinder never meets hot water, so it cannot pass the same test a kettle passes. The only question worth asking is whether dry coffee touches plastic — and most hand grinders have a polycarbonate lid over the bean chamber. We list the one that does not.

Popular gear that doesn’t qualify
The Moccamaster, much as the community loves it, brews through plastic — that gap is what pushed this whole conversation into the open. Nearly every pump espresso machine fails the same test, which is why the espresso section is short. And a few favorites that look all-metal don’t clear the bar either:
- Bodum Chambord French Press — the top mixes plastic and metal per Bodum’s own manual, and brewed coffee pours out through it. The shatterproof variant’s beaker is SAN plastic outright.
- Comandante C40 MK4 — the engine frame is Eastman Tritan and the grind chamber lid is plastic, so the grounds pass through polymer on the way down. One of the two supplied jars is polymer as well.
- 1Zpresso K-Ultra, J-Ultra, and Kingrinder K6 — each has a polycarbonate lid over the bean chamber. The grind path itself is metal, but the beans sit under PC.
Worth knowing: silicone seals appear in almost every pick here, including the strictest ones. Silicone is not a plastic, and no maker in this category avoids it. If it is on your personal avoid list, no product on this page clears your bar. The classic moka pot is aluminium: plastic-free by our bar, but if aluminium is also on your list, the stainless variants are the move.
